Diabetes or Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin or to use the insulin produced in the proper way. Normally, the pancreas produces the right amount of insulin to accommodate the quantity of sugar. However, if the person has diabetes, either the pancreas produces little or no insulin or the cells do not respond normally to the insulin. Sugar builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine and then passes from the body unused.


Types of diabetes:


*Type 1 diabetes. The disease can affect people of any age, but usually occurs in children or young adults. People with this form of diabetes need injections of insulin every day in order to control the levels of glucose in their blood. If people with type 1 diabetes do not have access to insulin, they die.


*Type 2 diabetes. Usually they can control the glucose in their blood by watching their diet, taking regular exercise, oral medication, and possibly insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and accounts for 90-95% of all diabetes.


What you should do to prevent it:


Eat More Fruits and Vegetables


Adding lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet will help prevent diabetes. Fresh fruits and vegetables are best, as they have fiber and nothing artificial added. If you eat canned or frozen fruits, avoid ones with sugar or other additives.


Exercise


Exercising regularly improves blood sugar control. Because active muscles drive out glucose from blood quicker than non-exercised muscles, regular exercise can do wonders in staving off or preventing diabetes. In addition, regular exercise also helps to maintain stable weight, another factor in preventing obesity.


These two things will not only help prevent diabetes, but are two of the most important things to help improve health in general. The two things that must be done to learn how to prevent diabetes are to change your diet and get regular exercise. Sounds simple, but doing these things will greatly increase your chances at avoiding diabetes.
